WEEKEND GETAWAY

Are you looking for a weekend getaway? Well plan ahead. Tybee Island is a great place to visit any time of the year and preferably spend long periods of time, but a weekend getaway is also perfect. And what better time to spend a weekend at Tybee than mid-April. There are a few reasons to spend mid-April at Tybee. Money from your tax refund should be in. The area will be alive with spring colors and The Tybee Wine Festival is being held April 17, 2010.

The wine festival will feature over 100 wines and tapas from local restaurants. This year the festival has two new features. Craft beers and a silent auction. The wine festival is held to help renovate Tybee Post Theater.

The wine festival is held on the grounds of Tybee's lighthouse. This is an added bonus. Tybee's lighthouse is well preserved, as well as, the historical support buildings of the lighthouse.

Southeast Coastal Lighthouses

Lighthouses. When you hear the word or see a lighthouse the romantic just comes out. Lighthouses led sailors home from the sea. Thus bringing men back to their wives and families. Once they saw those lighthouses they knew they were near land and then sailor's would then begin looking for the mark on the lighthouse that showed they were home.

Sailors knew they were getting near home by the color marks on lighthouses. They are called "DayMarks". Each lighthouse has a different color and design to distinguish them from other lighthouses in the area, and to note exactly which area, city that lighthouse was.

Some lighthouses could be determined by their unique shapes as well. Most people prefer the tall conical shaped lighthouses, but other designs, like pyramid shape, octagonal, square, short cylindrical shape and even some lights have been placed on top of light keeper's homes. Lighthouses can be made of brick, concrete and or metal. Most lighthouses are painted, while a few older lighthouses, that are no longer in use are natural brick.

The tallest U.S. masontry lighthouse in the southeast, and in the U.S at this time is at Cape Hattaras, NC. It measures at 207.49 feet from the bottom of the foundation (about 10 feet underground) to the top of the spire.

The shortest southeastern lighthouse is 25ft tall? It is on Sapelo Island, GA and is inactive. It was built in 1877 and is a square pyramidal cast iron skeletal tower with enclosed square lantern room. It is painted white. The newest lighthouse is in Charleston, SC and boasts an elevator and air conditioning.

The oldest ligthouse built on the southeast coast has also not been determined. This is because lighthouses have been built and rebuilt. It will take time to determine teh original and then current oldest.

One of the most unique lighthouses in the southeast is at Tybee Island, GA. It isn't that the lighthouse itself is a unique structure, but that the lighthouse is one of the most soundly structured lighthouses today and the historical support buildings surrounding the lighthouse are still intact.

A few of the strangest looking lighthouses along the Atlantic coast are at Sand Key Florida, Smith point light in Virginia and the lightship in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Spring Break

Winter's thaw is coming on, and if you are like me, I am beginning to think about taking a spring vacation. College students and professors are already talking about their Spring Break. So are school teachers in my area. Since our district has gone to a year round calendar teacher have 2 weeks off in the spring. I have spoken to many and they are counting the days until spring break arrives.

There are so many places to choose from that I decided to let the pictures of wonderful destinations help you decide.

Coastal Georgia

TAKE A TENNESSEE VACATION

Autumn is one of the best times to visit Tennessee. The Smoky mountains are the major destination spot to see fall foliage, however, right now all of Tennessee is vibrant with changing leaves.

Variations of red, yellow, orange can be seen throughout our forests. Visiting parks across the state are the best way to view fall foliage. Smoky Mountain State park is a great place to go hiking and camping this time of year. But Falls Creek Falls, near Crossville also has wonderous views and the falls this time of year is spectacular.

How about visiting one of your numerous lakes. Barkley and Kentucky lake are gorgeous and there are state parks like Paris Landing and land between the lakes that have reasonable prices.

Why not take a scenic tour on our rivers. Chattanooga, Nashville and Memphis will chaffuer tourists along our waterways in a riverboat. See the changing of the season as well as view great wildlife and enjoy a lazy day on the water.

Take hiking trips in one of our city parks. Joggers have some of the best views right now, but if you are visiting family in one of our major cities, taking a walk through a city park right now is a nature lover's dream.

A drive along Natchez trace allows visitors to see the changing colors up close. The winding road takes visitors from Nashville to Mississippi. This road trip can be liesurely with stops at nearby cities along the way or take the time to drive a short section near your own hometown to see the changing leaves.

Autumn is also one of the best times of the year to visit our wineries. Luscious fruits have been harvested and our Tennessee wineries have made some of the best fruit wines around. They are scattered all across Tennessee, so you won't miss an opportunity if you are only visiting one area of this beautiful state.

SCHOOL IS OUT

School is out and it is the time of year to plan your summer vacation. I know as a parent that when that last day of school comes around, I let out a sigh of relief. I don't have to run to school twice a day to drop and pick up my kids, I don't have to pack lunches, go to parent teacher conferences, and I don't have to go to fundraising functions associated with the school. WHITE STONE INN

The last weekend in February my husband needed to take a trip to Knoxville, TN to purchse some sheep. (See S & J Sheep ranch blog for that information). He is increasing the herd to include milk sheep. That allows their crossbreds to produce more milk and the lambs to grow that much faster.

He likes to include me on his trips, even though I am not the farming type. When we planned his sheep buying trip, he suggested we find a bed and breakfast to spend the night at. Well you know me, he suggests taking a trip and I am on it. I searched the internet, and found a bed and breafast within 40 minutes of our destiniation to Knoxville.

While I was searching the internet I found several good choices for bed and breakfasts. Before I get into our weekend, I wanted to give a few tips on where to search. The best place to begin your search for bed and breakfasts in TN is BnBfinder.com/Tennessee. As an aside, BnBfinder.com is also a great place to search for any B and B you wish to visit around the USA. BnBfinder.com allows for a search or breaks up the sate by regions. Therefore you can choose your B and B by the area in which you plan to visit.

White Stone Inn won out over other deserving bed and breakfasts because of the ammenities provided, nearby attractions and the location to our final destination.

Taking the Kingston Exit off I-40, we drive through the countryside; past homes and farms, wondering if we are lost. The winding roads take us far away from the city. After driving twenty minutes, we turn a curve and view two large white buildings, letting us know we were in the right place.

White Stone Inn sits atop the hills above Watts Bar Lake.
The inn consists of 6 buildings. Five of those buildings have rooms for rent, while the 6th building is a church for Sunday worship and weddings. I can only describe WhiteStone Inn as picturesque. Each building sat atop a hill with valleys dipping low around them. Trees void of leaves surrounded the farmhouse rose cottage and entrance barn, while a pond and pasture gave way to the valley where the working barn and horses were stabled, and on the opposite hill where the church and the lion and the lamb lodgings sat.

Our room was situated at the back of the farmhouse. The downstairs consisted of three bedrooms, the game room and the message therapist's rooms. Our room, which was called the Canada goose room was off the patio at the back of the main house. The large bay window gave a spectacular view of the the church and the Lion and the Lamb building. We also had a nice view of a portion of the lake and horses, but once we opened our door to the patio we had a full view of the lake.

Each room at Whitestone Inn is given a name and a theme, such as Blue Heron, Mallard Suite, Robins Nest, Oriole Suite and Eagles Landing Suite to name a few. Since ours was the Canada Goose room, our furnishings were light colored with beiges, whites and some brown and green thrown in. The large king size metal bed was covered with egyptian cotton sheets, and the thick mattress and down pillows were heavenly. Opposite the bed was the large bay window. Below the window, centered in the room was a gas log fireplace. Two chairs and a table sat off to the far side of the room. Our bathroom had an oversized jetted tub, yes large enough for two, a shower stall, toilet and large vanity. The room was equipped with a small tv and a personal size refrigerator, which held drinks.

Other rooms in the farmhouse have similar ammenties as ours. The humming bird suite, situated at the other side of the game room on the lower level of the farmhouse has the best view of the lake, and similar ammenities, but the room was much larger than ours. Nine bedrooms on three floors made up the sleeping arrangements in the farmhouse. The Entrance Barn houses four bedrooms, Rose Cottage and the Lion and the Lamb each have three bedrooms and the school house, which is where you check in, has two bedrooms.

Since Whitestone Inn is a bed and breakfast, I know you are wondering about the food. Breakfast is included in the cost of the room, but dinner reservations, which anyone can make, is not. I highly recommend booking dinner reservations. The meal was fantastic. The dining area is situated on the main floor of the farmhouse, and diners eat on an enclosed porch with a view of Watts Barr Lake. The tables are cozy and intimate with your names and city printed on a small card, showing you where your table is, and so the owner can relate to the patrons when he stops by your table during supper.

The dinner menu is a 5 course meal. The meal begins with an appetizer. The night we were there we had a small cup of corn chowder to ward off the cold. Our appetizer was followed by a salad or spinach leave, strawberries, pecans and feta cheese topped with a choice of poppy seed dressing or a vinegrette. While waiting for our entrees the staff brought in small cups of lemon sorbet for us to cleanse our palettes with. I had heard of this, but it was the first time I had experienced it. The sorbet was light and refreshing just before our entree.

The entree choices consisted of a beef, chicken or pork, a fish choice and a vegetarian pasta for those who do not eat meat. Steve had the steak while I chose the chicken. His grilled steak had sweet and smoky flavors that complemented each other. The choice of chicken that night consisted of a grilled chicken breast, spinach a tomato slice and melted mozzarella cheese. Our sides were rice with vegetables and a selection of squash and carrots. The dinner rolls were light and fluggy. Steve and I shared a piece of pie. The frozen dessert was made of chocolate, peanut butter, coconut, and nuts on a chocolate crust and drizzled with chocolate. It set us over the edge.

Breakfast the next morning was a large buffet with eggs, bacon sausage, cereals and oats, yogurt, fruit, hasbrowns, toast, biscuits and one of my personal favorites scones. The blueberry scones had just the right amount of sweetness to complemen my eggs and bacon. Juice, coffee and milk were served. We once again ate on the porch and our view of the lake just made breakfast that much more enjoyable.

We left all too soon, but had to get on the road to Knoxville. Since we had several hours to kill before picking up the sheep, Steve and I decided to take a little side trip. We left the Inn and went east taking a different route out than the one we came in on. The day was wet with a light rain, but the winding road around the lake, hills and farmland was just beautiful. We drove towards Loudon, Tennessee and I-75 to the Tennessee Valley Winery. It was just a short 30 minute trip to the winery, and once we left there we would continue on north on I-75 to I-40 and our destination to knoxville.

Tennessee Valley Winery is situated on top of a hill in a nondescript tan metal building. While the building is nothing to talk about, and the inside of the winery is quite small, the wines are quite good. You have to wait your turn to get a taste of the wines, but it is worth it. The owner is from Australia, who found his way to Tennessee. His wines include 9 red wines, 8 white wines and 3 fruit wines. We brought home several bottles, but my favorite was the Golden Muscat, a "medium white wine with strong fruity flavors." It is similar to Reisling and well made.

After our purchases we were on our way to Knoxville. I am sure you are thinking why is she bothering to tell us about the sheep purchase. Well it isn't just that. The sheep we bought are milk sheep, which produces sheep cheese. While we are not getting into that end of the business, crossbreeds with these milk sheep will increase the size of our lambs and we can take them to market much sooner.

After purchasing our sheep we bought some of the cheese. The hard cheeses had ripened and were ready for sale. The taste is similar to an aged cheddar, but with less moisture. The soft cheeses are not ready until May, and as of yet I have not purchased any of the soft cheeses. Locust Grove Farm sells their cheeses online and at local farmer's markets. Take a weekend trip to East Tennessee. While Whitestone Inn and the winery were our destinations, there are several bed and breakfasts in the area, and several wineries from Crossville east. Choose your own destinations and enjoy the beautiful scenery Tennessee has to offer. We are so much more than just Gatlinburg and Dollywood.

IT'S TIME TO TAKE A CRUISE

It is the time of year the cruise companies saturate the mail with advertisements for the upcoming year’s cruises. To get you out of the winter doldrums, their brochures depict turquoise waters, sandy beaches, coral reefs teeming with colorful fish; scantily clad lovers exploring an underwater world.

It already sounds inviting, and if I was smart I would book a cruise right away and forgo this article, but then I wouldn’t be able to finish this, and no one would have anything to read. Cruising is a great vacation experience. Bargains can be had on all major cruise lines, and for the more discerning tastes, if they book an early all-inclusive cruise then the 2 for 1 price usually applies.

But I am getting ahead of myself. As a travel writer and agent, I get tons of information on cruises this time of year. I receive information from the major cruise lines, but also get mail from the more exclusive lines. All those advertisements whet the appetite of any vacationer, but it is the exclusive lines that take a little more care in their advertisements to get the attention of the cruise vacationer.

We know that major cruise lines offer something for everyone. Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Norwegian, to name a few, cater to the masses. But there are some adventurous vacationers who want more out of their cruises. Cruise lines like Seven Seas, Seabourn give the discerning, adventurous traveler what they want. Most of these cruises are all inclusive. Many Seabourn and Seven Seas cruises charge 1 price for the cruise that is the only fee paid during the cruise. Everything is paid for. There are no hidden fees at the end of the cruise because you had two bottles of champagne or a margarita by the pool every day. Most ports of calls are also included. Some may be extra, but as a rule the majority are included in the cruise fee.

Not only is the cruise all inclusive, but many times there are specials that include airfare, upgrades and no fees for special ports of calls. These cruises seldom just visit the Caribbean. It isn’t that they don’t sail the Caribbean, but they too are more adventurous and like to sail Europe, Mediterranean, China, Baltic Seas and Hawaii to name a few destinations. These destinations take longer to cruise. The average cruise on these lines is 11 days. Some do offer 7 day cruises, but those cruises usually means that the end port is where the cruiser disembarks and flies home from a different destination than their arrival. Seven Seas has a wonderful Athens/Monte Carlo cruise that begins in Monte Carlo and ends in Athens. Cruisers will book a flight into Monte Carlo and the return flight will be from Athens. But don’t despair; Seven Seas cruises have FREE *airfare to Europe, so when you book all of those arrangements will be made.

One of the advantages of sailing with Seven Seas or Seabourn is that most, depending on the ship; some feature all of their staterooms with balconies. What a way to wake up in the morning. Imagine enjoying breakfast on your balcony while cruising the Mediterranean, sailing from Monte Carlo with its breathtaking architect drifting by; cruising through Italy, visiting Vatican city and searching for the lost city of Atlantis as you sail the waters near Santorini. The staterooms are larger than those on the major cruise lines. A nice 300 square feet compared to 175 on the major cruise lines. But the longer stay means being in your own room won’t be so bad.

The best time to book a vacation on the all inclusive cruises is by March and then again around August. Early bookings receive those exclusive deals of airfare, upgrades, all shore excursions for free. The cruise itself may be cheaper by booking within 30 days of sailing, but those specials will be gone.

Much is being discussed about Australia with the dream job being posted by Queensland, Why not cruise the barrier reef on a 15 night vacation with Seven Seas. Their Sydney to Singapore cruise is one of a lifetime adventure. Snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef is one of the pastimes on this cruise. Sail through several seas; the tropic of Capricorn, Arafura Sea, Timor Sea and the Java Sea. The cruise begins in Sydney sails through Indonesia and ends in Singapore. Ports of call allow cruisers to visit the deep blue waters off Newcastle, Australia, or the ancient evolutionary studies of Darwin, in Darwin, Australia. See the Komodo dragon on Komodo Island, Indonesia, and experience the wonder of Singapore’s food, entertainment, shopping and culture before flying home.

JUST GOT BACK FROM VACATION

I just got back from another vacation. We spent a week at the beach with my youngest step-daugther and her family. Family vacations are great. We played with grandkids, played on the beach, dug a hole (instead of building a sandcastle) and played in the ocean. We found a few shells in the water, but none on the beach. The water was crystal green and clear; just the right climate to play in the water all day. Lounging on the white sandy beach is a nice place to enjoy a cool drink and a good book if you don't like playing in the ocean.

We took a trip to Santa Rosa Beach, FL this year. This is our second visit to the area, and the condo where we stayed (both trips) is great for a small group. The Robinson's are fabulous hosts, and they provide everything except your bathing suit. You can see the ocean from the deck and the master suite. The waves lull you to sleep at night.

Hurricane IKE came through the gulf and brought massive waves in our area later in the week. That didn't stop us. We just moved to the pool and hot tub and hung out.

I was able to bum it all week in this place. If you don't feel like bumming it all the time, Destin is 12 miles to the west and you can be in Panama City in about an 45minutes. That way you get the best of both worlds.

The area has great restaurants, and several seafood stores if you want to eat in one night. The seafood store on hwy. 98 makes shrimp pie. It is awesome. It comes frozen. All you have to do is cook it and eat. They also have great fish, ready made crab cakes, raw shrimp, and fixings for just about any seafood dish you want to make.

One of my favorite dishes is shrimp and grits. There are several places to find this wonderful dish in Santa Rosa and the surrounding area; grayton beach, seaside, watercolor and seagrove beaches. These areas are just a few minutes east of Santa Rosa on hwy. 30A.

Well I am off planning my next vacation. I think I'll spend a long weekend in Savannah and Tybee Island next month. Spending halloween in one of the most haunted cities in the U.S sounds fun.
